Commission on floodwater diversions meets today

ISLAMABAD – The second meeting of the commission on unauthorised diversion of floodwater formed on Supreme Court orders will be held today (Saturday) at the office of the Cabinet Division secretary. In its previous meeting, the commission decided that all four provincial irrigation secretaries would brief the members of the commission on the issue.
It was also decided that the chairmen of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Federal Flood Commission (FFC) would brief the commission. It is expected that after these initial briefings, the commission would initiate day-to-day hearing of all relevant individuals and institutions. Subsequently, the commission would visit provinces and inspect the affected areas before finalising its report.
The devastating floods in July and August 2010 not only caused huge losses to the people but also exposed various departments who were supposed to provide protection and relief before, during and after the floods. The member of the commission are Azam Khan from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fateh Khan Khajjak from Balochistan, AW Kazi from Sindh, and Khawaja Zaheer Ahmad from Punjab.
