KARACHI – Workers’ unions of the Karachi Electric Supply Company’s (KESC) have vowed to continue their protest and disrupt operations till 4,000 of their sacked employees are restored.
People’s Workers Union Secretary Lateef Mughal told Pakistan Today said that the sudden dismissal of thousands of employees was a criminal act of the KESC management. He said that the management was “wasting” money on high salaries and unproductive expenditures, but on the other hand, had deprived thousands of families from their source of income.
KESC Labour Union Chairman Akhlaq Ahmed said that the management has left the poor employees in a “do or die” situation. “The employees would not rest until restoration” he said, claiming that his union would also file a petition in the labour courts against the suspension of employees.
KESC Shareholders Association Secretary Chaudhry Mazhar condemned the KESC’s decision to lay off 4,000 employees, and said that the move would add to criminal activities and lawlessness in the city. He argued that contractual business after the termination of the company’s employees would further increase the rate of corruption and mismanagement in the company.
Some sacked KESC employees also told Pakistan Today that workers plan to disrupt official activities at the company’s head office and other sub-offices during their protest.
