LAHORE – Senior Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa has stressed the concerned authorities to redress sugarcane grower grievances regarding payment for their crops at the earliest. He felt that this is vital to boost sugar cane production and meet the rising sugar demand. He appreciated the management of sugar mills for making 88.5 percent payments to farmers.
He expressed these views while addressing a meeting regarding sugar cane prices here on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Agriculture Minister Ahmad Ali Aulakh, Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Food Minister Abdul Ghafoor, Secretary Agriculture Nadeem Arif, Punjab Cane Commissioner Nayer Iqbal and other high ranked officers.
Senior Advisor to Chief Minister said that financially sound growers can play a dynamic role in agriculture development. He further stated that report submitted by the cane commissioner is highly encouraging as 99.5 percent of the previous crop dues have been paid.
The Government has taken action against sugar stockist mafia who were selling sugar at higher rates but unfortunately has ignored sugar mills owners who are paying to the farmers in the farm of sugar against sugarcane at much higher rates ( i-e at 72 Rs/ Kg instead of 64 Rs/ Kg).
