ISLAMABAD – The SC on Thursday directed the Establishment Division secretary to furnish a list of all police officers, including the FIA director general, appointed on a contractual basis by today (Friday).
A six-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, was hearing a suo motu case against the alleged corruption in Haj arrangements.
The court asked the Establishment secretary to also furnish the reasons why it was necessary for the government to allow them to continue with such posts like IG and DG, which were of high importance, adding that the people occupying these posts were supposed to be responsible to ensure the rule of law.
The court said on receipt of such a list, the SC will issue notices to all such officers to explain why had they been appointed on a contractual basis and why notifications for their appointments should not be cancelled. During hearing, the chief justice expressed reservations over target killings in Karachi and observed that even the Sindh IG had been appointed on a contractual basis, which had led to the deaths of 75 people in Karachi in January alone. He said one of the reasons of lawlessness in Karachi was the contractual IG.
