KARACHI – The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has condemned the “criminal negligence” of law enforcement agencies in protecting the lives of KESC officials at the utility’s head offices from a mob attack on Thursday, and demanded of the provincial and Federal governments to protect them from “hooliganism.”
In a statement issued by the KESC, the power utility claimed that the mob attacked their office, held employees hostage, and physically attacked the top management officials on duty. Equipment and property were ransacked, while vehicles were also torched, read the statement.
Many KESC officials on duty were seriously injured in the attack. The police and other law enforcement agencies were duly informed by the KESC management but they stood there watching the scene as silent spectators and did not act even after hours of the start of attack. The hooligans were physically attacking the duty personnel freely who were totally at their mercy with no rescue. This is a naked and flagrant display of lawlessness where local administration has conspired by giving the hooligans a free hand.
Despite several calls and intimations, the statement claimed, the city’s administration failed to protect the life and property of KESC employees. Hooliganism could adversely affect generation, transmission and distribution systems of the power utility, which was the KESC’s “prime interest.” The KESC further argued that such attacks are a direct threat to private investors of the power utility.
