LAHORE – Former chief selector Abdul Qadir Tuesday backed the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision of delaying the announcement of the captain for the World Cup.
He maintained that it would benefit the Pakistan cricket in the long run.
“By appointing Misbah as the vice captain in the ODI series against New Zealand, the PCB has actually put pressure on Afridi, which is indeed a good move. I am a firm believer of a backup policy not just for captain but for every player and official too. Misbah has done very well lately and I would not be amazed if he (Misbah) is given the responsibility to lead the national team in the mega event”, Qadir said in a television interview.
On World Cup squad, the former leg spinner urged the selectors to consider the name of Rana Naved, adding that the team selected for the ODI series against News Zealand is almost flawless.
The former chief selector criticized senior batsman Muhammad Yousuf for not honouring his commitments. Abdul Qadir also urged the PCB as well as the ICC to take notice of those who come out of retirement after announcing it.
“Yousuf has made a mockery of the word retirement, he also broke all the other promises which he earlier made such as not featuring in ICL or playing in Ramazan etc. He has set a bad precedent for the youngsters”, said Qadir who claimed 236 Test wickets for Pakistan.
