KESC police arrest wire-stealing gang

KARACHI – The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) police have arrested a gang of four for allegedly trying to steal copper wire from a substation in Defence area.
Sources said the police recovered wire cutters and two pistols from the possession of the gang, known as Lalay group, led by notorious Azizur Rehman Lalay and also took a Toyota car into custody.
Defence police have registered a case against the culprits and obtained their physical remand until January 21.
The KESC police’s in-depth investigations into a series of theft incidents of copper wire at KESC substations across the city have revealed that the wire was being stolen in an organised and systematic manner. The police established its information network and received a tip-off about a gang planning another theft at a substation in Defence. The KESC police intercepted the alleged accused on their way to the crime scene.
The arrested men were identified as gang leader Azizur Rehman alias Lalay, Mohammad Turyalay, Mohammad Saleem and Kaleem Hussain. Lalay had also been arrested previously on the same charges by the KESC police in the Sohrab Goth area.
Meanwhile, two other persons were also arrested from Zaman Town area in Korangi while trying to steal copper wire. An FIR was registered against them with the Zaman Town police.
