Lahore – 55th death anniversary of a famous short story writer, Saadat Hassan Manto was commemorated yesterday.
Manto was also a film and radio scriptwriter, and a journalist. During his 42-year stay on earth, he was able to produce 22 collections of short stories, one novel, three collections of essays and two collections of personal sketches. ‘Bu’ (Odour), ‘Khol Do’ (Open It), ‘Thanda Gosht’ (Cold Meat), and Toba Tek Singh are among his popular short stories. Manto touched sensitive topics through his pen including love, sex, prostitution and hypocrisy of Indo-Pak males. He also discussed social injustice in short stories and articles. Manto was criticized for his obscene writings and was also tried six times in this regard but was never convicted.
Manto was born on May 11, 1912 and died on January 18, 1955. Dabistan-e-SAFMA (South Asian Free Media Association) has scheduled to organize a ceremony to pay Manto a tribute on January 21 at SAFMA Center Shadman. Hameed Akhter, Ali Sufyan Afaaqi, Munoo Bhai, Ahmad Aqeel Roobi, Professor Tariq Zaidi, and the daughters of Manto including Nazhat Arshad and Nusrat Jallal will discuss the contributions made by Saadat Hassan Manto. Shujaat Hashmi will read out the famous short story, Toba Tek Singh.
