KARACHI – Despite the government’s efforts to improve the employment opportunities available to women, access to employment remains limited in most of the trades. Pakistan still remains lags in terms of gender gap and except for a few professions; women have very limited access to employment.
This was the consensus reached by participants of a seminar assessing gender inequality in the workforce. It was jointly organised by Sustainable Development Programme Institute (SDPI) and International Labour Organization (ILO) and held at Pakistan Readymade Garments Technical Training Institute (PRGTTI).
PRGTTI’s Programme Director Maham Nasira while speaking on the occasion said that Pakistan is at the bottom of the pool in Asia at 132nd position out of 134 countries and in terms of economic empowerment it also stood at 132. She claimed that the situation is however, improving, albeit at a slow pace due to the textile sector, especially garments manufacturers.
