LAHORE – The two-day Annual Golf Championship commences today at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club. The par 72, 18 holes Royal Palm Golf Course is considered an awesome test of players’ ability and skills.
The 92 eager participants who tee off will find their skills tested to the full before they can make any worthwhile effort to lay a claim on the title trophy. It is the single handicappers in the six and below range who are likely to emerge as frontrunners as the 36 holes competition progresses. The demanding Royal Palm Golf Course, with a yardage of 6820 from the blue tees and the longest par 5 measuring 570 yards, does not allow even the longest hitters the privilege of reaching the green in two shots.
However, contestants like Wazir Ali, Mohsin Zafar, Sardar Murad, Waqar Saigol, Azfar Hassan, Shoaib Bokhari, Amir Mehmood and Omer Salamat are all single handicap golfers of ability, who are not normally overawed by fierce competitive conditions. Amongst the younger lot, Omer Salamat, Wazir Ali, M Leghari and Hussain Hamid stand out and are loaded with promise, that has somehow not materialised as they are sandwiched between the game and their professional pursuits and hence are infrequent competitors.
