Being a law minister and spokesman for the big man is a major honour but someone still pines for that glamorous colonial mansion on Lahores Mall Road. We hear that the Doctor had been trying his best to get there before and after the late Taseers appointment as Governor. After Taseers tragic murder, the opportunity presented itself once again. Sadly, this time too, he was beaten to it by another legal eagle with just as lively a record as our good doctor. Word has it that on Thursday, the gentleman flew in to Lahore to condole with Justice Javaid Iqbal on the murder of his parents but could find no time or courage to attend the new governors swearing-in ceremony. Forgotten too was the tragedy that struck Taseer, the last resident of the mansion and his grieving family as people flocked around the new Guv. The king is dead, long live the king and of course, the show must go on.

It seems that match-fixing is not the only money issue that plagues our cricketing heroes though it may be more specific to the young ones. The older lot has also done their bit in the money making area. At least one has actually landed a friend in serious trouble with the law. This ex-cricketer had pledged a friends property to a bank for a few months to raise some working capital for his knitwear unit. With nothing to loose but a friend, the ex-cricketer never bothered to pay the bank for 20 years, packed up his business and moved on to more lucrative things such as managing cricket and of course stopped taking the friends calls. The friend, now settled in Toronto, came back to clear his name but not before he coughed up more money to pay the ex-cricketers liabilities while the latter was away on tour in New Zealand. With friends like that, who needs a friendly banker.

Apparently Government College, Lahore, now a university, has something in common with the Muslim League. It has two associations both claiming to represent the institutions old boys. One happens to be the Old Ravians Association operating since a few decades and there is the other, the Old Ravians Union, a much later development, which nevertheless has the faculty members patronage. The rivalry is getting so intense that parallel meetings are held and allegations are hurled at each other. Recently some union members have refused to shake hands with association members making people wonder what the big stakes here are. Maybe, it is time now for a New Old Ravian Union Association to be formed.
