KARACHI – The lawyers’ fraternity, by and large, has welcomed the amendment in law granting civil courts the authority to hear property suits worth up to Rs 15 million.
“The previous bodies of the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) and the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) reached at a joint decision regarding the jurisdiction of civil courts during my tenure as SHCBA president,” Rasheed Razvi told Pakistan Today,
Razvi went on to explain that when the colonial judicial system was instituted, a separate law was made for port cities such as Madras, Calcutta, Bombay, and of course, Karachi. Ever since, property disputes were discussed at the high court level. “This is a welcome change,” he said.
Karachi Bar Association (KBA) President Mohammad Aqil welcomed the change in law, and argued that junior lawyers will be able to learn more from practising in district courts. “This will also provide greater employment opportunities for lawyers,” he said.
