ISLAMABAD – In compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court, the government has decided in principle to formulate a legislation to ensure that any person arrested by intelligence agencies is detained under the law. The government has also decided to establish a tribunal to deal with the cases of missing persons.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Thursday chaired a meeting at the Ministry of Interior to discuss the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Report of the ‘Commission of Enquiry on Enforced Disappearances’ submitted to the prime minister and the Supreme Court on 31 December, 2010.
The attorney general of Pakistan, the interior and defence secretaries, the Law Ministry solicitor general and senior representatives of the Home Departments were also present. The meeting decided to form a committee under the chairmanship of the attorney general of Pakistan with representatives from the ministries of Interior, Defence and Law. The committee will submit its report within three weeks.
