LAHORE – Citizens have discovered a new way to circumvent the low gas pressure and Sui gas load-shedding. A number of domestic, commercial and industrial gas consumers in the city have installed pressure pumps or compressors on their gas supply lines to boost gas pressure, Pakistan Today has learnt.
IT’S SAFE AND AFFORDABLE: Muhammad Ramazan, a refrigerator mechanic at College Road, said one could easily avoid low gas pressure by installing a used or new refrigerator compressor on the gas pipeline. He disclosed that it was a matter of few thousand rupees; reconditioned refrigerator compressors were available at Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 and new compressors were available at Rs 4,800 to Rs 6,000. He said he had installed dozens of compressors for a number of domestic and commercial consumers. He said an average refrigerator compressor produced sufficient gas pressure for stoves, heaters and geysers. Used refrigerator compressors were popular among domestic users owing to their low price, he added. He pointed out that for tandoors, bakeries and restaurants, relatively high gas pressures were required, and for the matter, air conditioner compressor or a gas pump could do the job. He underlined that the new technique was safe, as there was no gas compression or storage involved in it and were used only to boost pressure by sucking gas from pipelines.
IT’S ILLEGAL: Talking to Pakistan Today, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) spokesman said it was sheer violation of the gas supply contract, which barred consumers to install any additional appliance or equipment on the gas supply line. He said SNGPL was aware of the prevalent situation and was trying to formulate a strategy to curb irregularities. He added that SNGPL had disconnected a number of commercial and industrial gas connections on such irregularities. He said though the SNGPL had a lenient policy for domestic consumers, but the company was formulating a strategy to stop such malpractices. He said SNGPL had some 3.7 million domestic gas consumers and it was impossible for the company to check each and every consumer. The refrigerator compressors and modern gas pumps did no produce noise, which had made detections difficult.

The use of compressor at gas line is a very dangerous. Compressor should be never used at domestic or Industrial level. Last year a heavy blast occurred In MureedKe city and complete room and a man died. The pieces of dead body were collected from main road.
Reason was that compressor was installed & in night due to electric load shedding it was off and fire of gas heater was off but due to low pressure of gas. then after 1 hour light came and compressor started filling gas in room because there was no fire in gas heater. then in morning the man switched on tube light & due to little spark of switch, room was blasted. All the dresses + room accessories + man body was at main GT road and parts of body were hanging on different buildings and poles etc.
NEVER NEVER do any experiment and NEVER PLAY with Gas even you have taken life Insurance plan.
So where does your story proves compressor are dangerous? it is the carelessness not the compressor …

The use of compressor in gas line requires full attention and care, There is possibility that use of compressor may blast the gas line and can be very dangerous.

I agree with you on this, it has nothing to do with compressor.
Accidents happen due to carelessness, which must be avoided.
Although it is the responsibility of the government to provide such basic needs but they are busy in other activities.
There are two solutions to this problem.
.1. to install proper pumping stations at various places to cover up the demand.
in case shortage of natural gas is the reason, then
.2. Gas companies should add SNG (synthetic natural gas) compressors, which combine LPG + Air to derive at SNG,
SNG has almost same results as natural gas, for which gas companies do not need to add extra lines.
Also when we do not have natural gas, we always use this LPG alternate (domestic and commercial).
LPG could also be imported if required.

Firstly, consider the following situation.
All the heaters and valves are turned off in the house but the compressor is mistakenly left running. This would cause the pressure in the gas pipes to rise and if the compressor is good enough then, it will cause the pipes to explode.
Secondly, there is a high social cost to pay for installing a compressor, because all that a compressor is doing is sucking gas from the nearby neighborhood. So in a hypothetical situation, if 40% gas was reaching two houses, then after installing a compressor only 1 house will get 80% gas and the inhabitants of the other house will freeze!
I think it is responsibility of govt to provide basic needs of life the gas is one of them , if govt has completely failed to provide it then what the consumers should do , using compressor they are paying bill of gas as well electricity it is too expansive but they are forced to to do so. First govt should fulfill the basic needs and then if some one violates it should be prosecuted.
its the duty of sui gas eng or company to maintain the required pressure , if they can not do so govt should punish them , in abroad gass pressure never drop but in pakistan their is no rule

Do not use compressors……losers!
People who use compressors are thieves. You do not need religion or government to know that stealing is wrong. If you do not get the pressure, it does not mean that you turn into a thief and start robing others. Get a life!
