16-year-old case closed – NAB exonerates Mukhtar citing lack of evidence

ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (Rtd) Syed Deedar Hussain Shah on Wednesday approved closure of a sixteen-year old corruption inquiry against Defence Minister Ch Ahmed Mukhtar citing lack of ‘substantial evidence’.
He issued directives while chairing the NAB Executive Board meeting held here. The meeting approved cases for filing references against notables from Punjab and Balochistan including former minister and PPP leader Mir Baz Mohammad Khan Kehtran, and Zafar Iqbal Magsi, a former DCO who had been accused of misappropriating public funds.
References against politician Saeed Ahmed Qureshi were also approved for alleged bogus claim on account of flour milling charges and Ch Muhammad Rashid Khan, former Director/Superintending, Engineer WAPDA, for allegedly ‘accumulating assets’.
Deedar Shah also stressed the need to decide the cases ‘on merit’ in pursuit of steps against corruption ‘irrespective of political affiliations’ and status of the individuals involved.
The Board also ordered to re-investigate the cases against; Khurram Javed for misappropriating public funds as well as against Muhammad Younis Marwat, an employee of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), who was on deputation to Development Bank of Afghanistan as ECO.
Similarly other inquiries against Falak Khursheed, former DIG Karachi, and officials of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for land acquisition for new airport in Rawalpindi were also closed.
The Board also approved the plea bargain request of Abdul Rashid, former X-EN WAPDA, and Khalid Rehman, former Chairman Muslim Industrial Cooperative Corporation Ltd.
