ISLAMABAD – The third round of Pakistan-Japan consultations on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation issues was held in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Dr Irfan Yusuf Shami, Director General, Disarmament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs was heading the Pakistani delegation, said a foreign office statement issued here.
It said the Pakistani side underscored the need for maintaining strategic and conventional stability in South Asia as well country’s desire for non-discriminatory access to peaceful uses of nuclear technology for its economic development.
Ambassador Makio Miyagawa, Director General, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs led the Japanese side. The statement said the talks were held in a constructive and cordial atmosphere.
Both sides exchanged views on the current developments in areas of disarmament and non-proliferation as well as matters pertaining to regional and global security.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to promote the goals of non-proliferation and work as partners in this regard. They also reiterated the importance they attached to their bilateral relations.
The Pakistan side emphasised that it sought a forward-looking and ‘meaningful engagement’ in these areas.
Both countries agreed to extend the scope of the Security Dialogue during the visit of the Japanese Foreign Minister to Pakistan in January 2006.
