ISLAMABAD – The investigation into the Haj scam is unlikely to reach its logical end as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) team has not been able to obtain any concrete evidence since the government of Saudi Arabia has disallowed the FIA team to record statements of Saudi nationals.
A source in the FIA told Pakistan Today that the Saudi government had asked its citizens not to record any statement with the Pakistani officials.
The source also said the FIA team, comprising Khalid Rasool and Mian Sabir, had so far not succeeded in obtaining any substantial evidence. He said the Saudi government had asked its citizens not to give any statement to the FIA team after the Supreme Court of Pakistan declined to invite the Saudi ambassador in Pakistan to record his statement before the SC. “The Saudi government has not only barred its citizens from recording their statement but also refused to issue visa to a senior FIA official, Shuja Naveed, when he was assigned to visit Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Meanwhile, the removal of FIA DG Waseem Ahmed from the investigation team by the Supreme Court on Tuesday has also put the government in a difficult situation. “The FIA is mulling the proposal of preparing a list of competent officials from other agencies,” an FIA official said.
