Referring to the Pakistan Today report “Blasphemy law should remain intact” (PT, Tuesday January 11), former Supreme Court Bar President has issued the following statement:
“What I had precisely stated was that those who support section 295-C PPC and oppose any amendment in the law should also ensure that it is adhered to and not violated. I pointed out to the supporters of the Blasphemy Law that there was a contradiction in their position. On the one hand they supported S. 295-C. On the other hand they endorsed its violation by people who take the law into their own hands.
Salman Taseer’s death proved that precisely those people who support 295-C were making it redundant and dysfunctional. This was illogical on the face of it. If they want to have the 295-C, they must ensure that it is adhered to and people do not go on an extra-judicial killing spree. Any other attribution to me is wrong.”
