ISLAMABAD – Acceding to the longstanding demand of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, the federal government on Monday allowed the provincial government to process three hydropower projects totalling 473 megawatts (MW) on a fast-track basis through its own resources.
According to official sources, the KP government was allowed to process 132-MW Shogosin, 144-MW Shushgai Zhendoli and 197-MW Kalam Asrit projects. The decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board.
Previously, provinces were allowed to process hydel power projects of up to 50MW, but after the approval of the 18th Amendment, the provinces can process higher capacity hydel power projects.
Sources said the Asian Development Bank had assisted the KP government for the feasibility studies of Shogosin and Shushgai Zhendoli projects.
The KP government would develop these projects through its own resources and could even seek assistance from the private sector, sources said.
