LAHORE – Minister for Textile Industry Rana Muhammad Farooq Saeed Khan has assured five-day gas supply to the textile industry in Punjab.
He was talking to media at the office of All Pakistan Textile Mills association (APTMA) following a meeting with APTMA office-bearers. The minister said that the textile sector of Pakistan is competent and has the potential to touch the export target of $25 billion. He stated that the cotton production could have been reasonably good but recent floods had destroyed it. “If there had been no floods then our cotton production would have been bumper,” the minister said, adding that the Textile Act is in the pipeline and would soon be presented in the national assembly.
Talking on the occasion, APTMA Chairman Gohar Ejaz said that the shortage of gas is only 15 percent in the country, whereas, shortage of electricity is 300 percent. He said that gas shortage could be met through import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). “The textile sector is extremely competent and possesses a lot of potential,” Gohar Ejaz said adding that the government should not curtail gas for the industries, as the sector generates plenty of foreign exchange.
