Enter the age of no maternal mortality?

KARACHI – The Sindh Assembly (SA) unanimously passed a resolution on Monday, demanding the government to address the root causes of maternal mortality in the province.
The resolution was moved by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA Dr Syed Ahmed Ali Shah, with many others adding their signatures as movers.
Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed, who belongs to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), defended the government, while PPP members complained of the lack of medical facilities and shortage of medicines at government hospitals.
The health minister argued, however, that there was a need to sensitize people to minimise birth ratio. He said that women in Sindh are suffering from the worst form of malnutrition.
PPP legislator and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Jam Tamachi Unnar suggested that 2012 should be declared as the “Child-free Year,” arguing that when there would be no child in a year, the government could concentrate on improving the conditions of government hospitals.
