KARACHI – A group of citizens lodged an official complaint on Sunday with the Darakhshan police against the prayer leader at Sultan Masjid, accusing him of endangering the life of former Information and Broadcasting minister Sherry Rehman.
The group has been assured by the Darakhshan police station SHO that an FIR would be lodged within five days. The prayer leader has declared that Sherry was an infidel and should be killed for tabling a bill for amendments in blasphemy laws.
Meanwhile, police are reluctant to lodge FIRs against clerics and recent attempts by citizens to end the hate-mongering from religious quarters have come to naught. “Intelligence officials attend Friday prayers at mosques and note down instigating statements by clerics. Action will be taken against them,” a duty officer at the Taimuria police station told Pakistan Today on the condition of anonymity.
“You can’t get an FIR registered at the moment, but you can file a complaint if you want. The SHO will get back to you regarding the FIR. He is on duty with the prime minister’s security detail, but will call back when he returns,” the official said. The Taimuria SHO, however, could not be contacted for comments.
