LAHORE – The ICC’s ant-corruption tribunal hearing the spot-fixing charges against Pakistan trio of Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and Salman Butt sought statistical probability of three separate no-balls in a specified period in a match.
The experts told the tribunal members that a statistical probability would be 1.5 million to one. According to Sky News, Three Pakistan players facing the hearing are alleged to have conspired to bowl deliberate no-balls on the orders of alleged fixer Mazhar Majeed – the agent of one of the accused Salman Butt. The alleged offences took place during the fourth Test against England at Lord’s last August.
The 1.5 million to one figure was presented to the hearing by the ICC after being worked out by a statistician they have employed. The tribunal has continued into a fourth day. It is scheduled to go into Tuesday, but may conclude with verdicts on Monday.
The Pakistan trio’s case is being heard in a brand new, high tech courtroom, complete with plasma screens. Although there is a viewing gallery at the back of the room, public and press are not allowed into the hearing on the 12th floor of the towering Qatar Financial Centre.
