The crisis created by Mian Nawaz Sharifs notice to PPP to urgently implement a list of reforms or be prepared for parting of ways in Punjab and demands for mid-term elections has been averted after Prime Minister Gilanis positive response. There is a need now to go ahead and, as Gilani put it, do the doable and discuss what the government thinks is not possible with the PML(N) team. The appointment of Senator Ishaq Dar, considered a soft-liner, as the team leader indicates a conciliatory approach by Mian Nawaz Sharif, as does the recall of the threat of the break up of the coalition in Punjab. In case reports about Latif Khosa being appointed the new Governor of Punjab turn out to be true, this would constitute a similar gesture on the part of the PPP.

Many had welcomed Mian Nawaz Sharifs charter of demands as a move towards a much needed dialogue between the two parties on crucial issues concerning economy and governance. As Gilani recognised in his briefing to the media on Sunday, the most serious problem the country faces is that of the economy which is fast moving towards a possible meltdown. There being lack of national consensus over economic reforms the decision to enforce the RGST had to be postponed and the hike in the POL prices taken back. The two moves have further burdened the national exchequer besides sending negative signals to the IFIs and the Obama administration.

The government now has to move apace on the reforms agenda to save the economy and improve governance. With the PML(N) standing by the PPP, the later has acquired political space needed to take up crucial matters with courage and determination. The two parties should start with non-controversial issues like jointly formulating a plan to end the energy crisis causing load-shedding of electricity and gas, and measures to put a check on the prices of essential commodities. It should not be difficult to agree on an independent election commission and accountability body. The two parties have an opportunity to strengthen the system while at the same time reduce the sufferings of the common man. The PPP should undertake the task of pursuing the reforms with due diligence while the PML(N) should avoid being stingy about cut off dates. To its credit, the latters chief Nawaz Sharif has, in yesterdays press conference, categorically stated that he never gave any ultimatum. To the future, then.
