Textile exports increase by 26.88pc in five months

ISLAMABAD – Textile export registered an increase of 26.88 percent during the period from July to November 2010 as compared to the same period of the last financial year. According to the data available with Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) the export of raw cotton increased by 15.43 percent as about 49,688 metric tonnes of raw cotton worth $121.433 million was exported.
Meanwhile, the export of cotton yarn also grew by 17.80 percent The export of cotton yarn was recorded at 298,178 metric tonnes and earned $ 611.359 million during the period from July to November 2009-10, the data revealed.
Besides the export of cotton yarn, the export of cotton cloth from the country also increased by 27.87 percent during the period under review as compared to the same period last year. About 749,649 thousand SQM were exported during July to November 2010-11 which added $ 901.073 million as compared to 704,219 thousand SQM costing $ 704.671 million of same period last year.
However, the export of cotton carded or combed decreased by 92.01 percent as about 566 metric tonnes costing $ 0.656 million was exported as compared to 9,785 metric tonnes worth $ 8.212 million in the first five months of 2009-10.
The export of yarn other then cotton yarn increased by 15.43 percent. Knitwear, bed-wear and export of towel also registered an increase of 20.67 percent, 14.22 percent and 7.32 percent respectively.
Textile Industry Act being framed to stop hoarding of cotton, yarn: Minister for Textile Industry Rana M Farooq Saeed Khan on Friday told the National Assembly that Textile Industry (Development and Promotion) Act is being framed to stop mills or other parties from hoarding of cotton and yarn. Replying to a question, he said that currently the ministry has no legal instrument through which mills or other parties could be stopped from hoarding. He hoped that the act would be finalized in two months. He said at present, the provincial governments are playing a significant role in checking the hoarding and speculation in cotton and yarn markets. To a supplementary question, he said the country’s textile exports have witnessed a 20 percent rise during the last year.
