KP Assembly opposes changes in blasphemy law

PESHAWAR – Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa Assembly on Friday, through a unanimous resolution, urged the federal government not to introduce any amendments to the blasphemy law. The resolution was moved in the House by Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam-F MPA Mufti Kifayat Ullah when Deputy Speaker Khushdil Khan was in the chair. The resolution, carrying signatures of parliamentary leaders of other political forces also, was adopted without any debate.
They included Senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour and Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain from Awami National Party, Abdul Akbar Khan from PPP and Pir Sabir Shah from PML-N. Mufti Kifayat Ullah read out the text of the resolution and it was adopted unanimously by the House.
The resolution states that blasphemy always remained a sensitive issue for Muslims and, at this stage, the country is in dire need of unity amongst political and religious forces for handling issues like terrorism, price hike, unemployment and others. Similarly, it also suggests that the head of parliamentary committee on blasphemy law must be a Muslim. Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, when contacted, justified adoption of the resolution to ease the growing tension in the country.
