ISLAMABAD – The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), an eight-party alliance of the Barelvi school of thought, would discuss the situation arising after the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer in a meeting scheduled at Eidgah Sharif in Rawalpindi on Monday.
The chairman of the SIC, Sahibzada Haji Fazl-e-Kareem, will preside over the meeting. Kareem told Pakistan Today that the meeting would discuss the issue of Tahafuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat in the context of the assassination of Salmaan Taseer and the prevailing political situation in the country.
A source in the SIC said the meeting would take a principle decision on how to deal with the issue of Taseer’s assassination and whether to morally defend the assassin, Malik Mumtaz Qadri. Apparently, Sunnis have justified the act of Mumtaz Qadri or at least, the observers opine, they have not condemned the assassination in severe terms.
