ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday disposed of the case of 11 missing inmates of Adiala Jail, now in custody of spy agencies, after it was assured by the intelligence agencies that arrangements had been made to facilitate meetings of the prisoners with their families.
Raja Muhammad Irshad, lawyer for intelligence agencies, told a three-member bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, that arrangement for meeting of fathers, mothers, wives, sons and daughters with the 11 inmates of Adiala Jail, could be made whenever required by the relatives.
“I have been instructed by the authorities concerned to make a statement before the court in this regard,” the lawyer told the court.
During hearing, the chief justice appreciated the efforts and cooperation extended by Raja Irshad to the court in other cases, particularly in the missing inmates case.
“We expect that the trial of these 11 inmates will be conducted per law,” the chief justice asked Raja Irshad.
“No further action is called for and the petition stands disposed of,” the court ruled. On January 5, the court had directed the spy agencies to ensure the meeting of families with the inmates of Adiala Jail. On December 10, the Supreme Court had directed the lawyer for intelligence agencies to arrange meetings of the 11 then-missing prisoners of Adiala Jail with their families.
