House fire burns crippled woman

LAHORE – A 65-year-old disabled woman was burnt when fire erupted at her house at Pakistani Chowk, Ichra, in the early hours on Thursday. The deceased, Razia, lived in a two-story house with her daughter, her son-in-law, Tariq, and two children. Razia was alone at her house, which was locked from outside, when suddenly, owing to short circuiting, fire erupted in Razia’s room. Flames soon engulfed the entire house. Locals called Rescue 1122 officials, who extinguished the fire. However when rescue officials managed to enter the house, Razia had already died. Rescue 1122 official, Zahid told Pakistan Today, “Locals told us that they had complained WAPDA officials about short circuiting in the area several times but they had not bothered. People are infuriated and were thinking to lodge a protest against WAPDA officials but later they decided against it.” Tariq, a local, said the first fire fighting vehicle reached the scene after about half an hour of their call. He held Rescue 1122 and Fire Brigade officials responsible for the Razia’s death. Ichra Police Station Sub Inspector Anwar told Pakistan Today that one could not hold Rescue 1122 officials responsible for the death because roads leading to Razia’s house were narrow and fire fighting vehicles were not able to reach there. He said that they have handed over the body to the deceased’s family without an autopsy. He said when the fire erupted Razia’s daughter was out for breakfast while Tariq had gone to drop his kids to school.
