ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Wednesday demanded the government introduce new legislation to stop the abuse of blasphemy laws. Condemning the assassination of Salmaan Taseer, Shujaat said the government should draft new laws by taking all political and religious parties on board to stop the abuse of the existing blasphemy law.
Addressing the PML-Q Central Working Committee meeting, Shujaat said, “The government should not touch or alter the existing blasphemy laws as it could invite dire consequences.
There is a need to introduce a new piece of legislation to check the abuse of the blasphemy law,” he proposed, adding that the real controversy was the abuse of law, not the law itself.
He said the government should settle the controversy over blasphemy law within one month by taking all political and religious parties on board, otherwise the issue could turn into a catastrophe.
Earlier, the PML-Q CWC passed a resolution which asked the government not to amend or repeal the blasphemy law. The resolution was moved by Ghous Bukhsh Mehar.
