Ranger’s stray bullet kills elderly man

LAHORE – A man was killed by the stray bullet in the Khana Police station precincts on Wednesday. The relatives of the deceased alleged that the bullet was fired from the Rangers firing centre near their home.
The deceased was identified as Haji Maqbool Ahmad, 63-years-old, a resident of the Engineers Town, Defence road. The nephew of the deceased Zeeshan told Pakistan Today that on the day of incident, Maqbool was reading newspaper on his terrace when a stray bullet hit his back and he fell down. He was rushed to the General Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Jawad Ahmad, son of the deceased, told Pakistan Today that the stray bullet was fired from the army firing range located around 1.5 miles from their residence. He said that he had gone to the firing range some days ago and complained about stray firing.
He alleged Military Police personnel had come to General Hospital and took photographs of the deceased. “They came and went without talking to anyone and did not respond to questions of who was to blame for the death of my father,” Jawad said. An FIR has been registered against the unidentified people under the section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code.
The deceased’s son claimed that Station House Officer (SHO) Arshad Dogar had been insisting the section might be changed due to the pressure from the military to lodge the case under Section 319. Whereas, SHO Irshad Dogar Khana, talking to Pakistan Today, said that he was acting without pressure but confirmed that the case may be downgraded to section 319 given the absence of an intentional murder.
