ISLAMABAD – As President Asif Ali Zardari has already started the consultative process to seek a successor to slain Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, the question that has started to haunt many aggrieved PPP leaders is who can replace him?
All Punjab PPP leaders, including Jehangir Badr, Raja Riaz and Qasim are timid, and lack Taseer’s calibre and charisma. Moreover, they do not enjoy the level of trust of the PPP leadership as Taseer used to do. A PPP source, however, said Law Minister Babar Awan will be the most probable choice for the prized slot.
“It is Awan’s dream. His comrades have also conveyed his willingness to takeover the responsibility relinquished by the late Taseer,” the source added. However, the source said the president wanted Awan to stay in the capital and look after the more important Law Ministry. A final decision would be taken in a day or two, the source said.
