LAHORE – Supporters of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) took to streets in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and other cities, burning tyres and blocking traffic in protest after the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, private TV channels reported on Tuesday.
The protests broke out in the provincial capital of Punjab and the home town of the late Taseer, who was assassinated in Islamabad in an attack officials said was carried out by one of his bodyguards. The protesters chanted slogans in support of the PPP and blocked traffic on The Mall.
All major markets and business centres were closed in most parts of the city, where people descended on the residence of the late governor to mourn his death. Senior Punjab Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed said the governor’s body would be brought to Lahore after a postmortem and that a time for his funeral would be announced on Wednesday.
