ISLAMABAD – A ministerial committee will take up the issue of unilateral price increase of urea with the representatives of fertiliser industry here on Tuesday.
Taking strict notice of the increase in urea prices by manufacturers, the Ministry of Industries has convened a meeting of the Fertiliser Review Committee. The meeting would be chaired by the Minister for Industries and would be attended by federal ministers for agriculture and provincial agriculture ministers.
The meeting has been convened, as the government is not satisfied with the explanation of the manufacturers, who have justified an increase in urea prices due to the 20 percent curtailment in the feed stock gas. The gas curtailment led to a decline in production and the government had to allow import of 225,000 tonnes of urea from Saudi Arabia.
With the recent hike, the local urea prices have increased to Rs 1100 per bag as compared to Rs 904, a week back. This price is still cheaper than the import cost, which is around Rs 2000 per bag.
