Aitzaz sees no threat to government

ISLAMABAD – Central leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and prominent lawyer Aitzaz Ahsen on Monday dispelled the impression that the incumbent government faced any threat and that no ‘big change’ was ‘visible’ on the political horizon.
“Unless and until no-confidence motion is moved against Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in the National Assembly, he will enjoy the majority and any threat to the present government is unlikely at the moment”, he said while talking to reporters at the Supreme Court premises. It is to recall that the Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) with its 25 seats in the National Assembly and Jamiat Ullema-e-Islam (JUI-F) with eight seats have quit the coalition government giving rise to speculations that it could change the political scenario.
Aitzaz said, “The act of parties’ parting ways with the government would not affect the ruling PPP government and the present political crisis would not last long. But if the prime minister is removed, it would be difficult to elect his successor”.
He said since not a single member of the parliament wanted the legislative bodies dissolved, it was unlikely that no-confidence motion would be tabled in the National Assembly. “The prime minister can only be removed only if president asks him to take the vote of confidence or when the members of the parliament pass no-confidence motion. And presently both are distant possibilities’, he added.
