After the PPP-MQM breakup, other parties weigh up options

LAHORE – After Mutahidda Qaumi Movement’s breakaway from the coalition government, opposition parties have yet to come up with a decisive strategy to decide the fate of embattled PPP-led government.
According to sources, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz group has planned not to give vote of confidence to the prime minister. Political parties, especially MQM chief Altaf Hussain intensified their contacts with other parties. PML-Quaid group did not show any reaction.
PTI believed that the situation would reveal Nawaz Sharif’s true face. Whereas experts have said that the future depends on the decision taken by PML-N. Reacting on the situation, PML-N leader MNA Saad Rafiq said that PML-N will not extend its support to government, adding that MQM will know now what it is like to be in the opposition.
PML-Q Like Minded leader Kurshid Kasuri said that party would set its future line of action after making consultations and the picture would be clear in a few hours. JUI -F Ghafoor Haideri said that situation demanded of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to seek vote of confidence. On a query he said that everybody in the opposition had to finalize joint strategy as JUI-F alone could not do anything.
PPP senior leader Faisal Raza Abadi showing optimism said that if a person was deprived of all support and left alone to swim in river he learns to survive sooner or later. Federal Law Minister Babar Awan said that a 90’s replay would be damaging for democracy.
MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said that party’s doors were open for all political parties, saying despite joining the opposition MQM will continue to support government on its good policies.
Altaf calls up political leaders
ISLAMABAD – In the backdrop of his party’s central coordination committee’s late night decision to sit on opposition benches in the National Assembly and the Senate, MQM chief Altaf Hussain made several telephone calls to the heads of various political parties to take them into confidence over the decision.
Altaf talked to the leadership of the PML-Q, PML-F and JUI-F leaders. MQM spokesman said Altaf discussed the current political situation with Chaudhry Shujat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, PML-F chief Pir Pagaro, Ijazul Haq and some other leaders and thoroughly discussed the current political situation.
Altaf informed the leaders that rampant corruption continued in all government departments and anti-poor policies of the PPP-led government had forced the MQM to join the opposition. Staff Report
