LAHORE – The International Cricket Council has summoned Pakistan coach Waqar Younis and ODI captain Shahid Afridi to appear before the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal. The ICC made a request to the PCB to direct Afridi and Younis to appear before the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal.
Suspended Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir are due to appear before the three-member tribunal in Doha from January 6 to 11. The Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement that the ICC had asked for Waqar and Afridi to attend the hearing.
It said the pair would attend either in person or through a teleconference. Afridi is returning home after a T20 series in New Zealand, but Waqar will be helping the team prepare for the first Test. The ICC wants Younis and Afridi to be in the witness stand against their own fellow cricketers.
The Doha hearing will determine the guilt or otherwise of the three Pakistan players who have been accused of serious violations of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. “The PCB is committed to rooting out corruption, in any form, from cricket, and has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption,” said an official of the board.
He further stated: “The PCB is also keen to assist the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal in determining in a fair and just manner the truth behind the allegations being made against the three Pakistan players. Therefore the PCB has decided to allow Shahid Afridi and Waqar Younis to appear as witnesses before the Tribunal.”
