Khyber PK retain squash team title

PESHAWAR – The Khyber PK squash team retained the title of the men’s team event for the third consecutive time after upsetting their strong rivals WAPDA in the 31st National Games played here on Thursday at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex.
They won the title in Quetta National Games and Karachi earlier on as in the first match of best of three, Waqar Mehboob Khan of Khyber PK in a thrilling encounter defeated Asian gold medallists Amir Atlas Khan. The score was 3-11, 8-11,11-8, 11-6,14-12. The second match was played between Mansoor Zaman of Khyber PK who beat Farhan Mehboob of WAPDA by 11-5, 11-8,10-12,11-8. After wining their both games,
the Khyber PK obtained another gold medal for the province. HEC and Punjab were awarded bronze medals.
Volleyball: In the single league matches, the first match was played between Khyber PK and Police which was won by Khyber PK in three straight sets. The Khyber PK team which mostly comprised young players and outclassed the defending champion Police by 25-18, 25-21,25-23 sets. In the second match, Navy beat Army. Both the team played well and got applause from the spectators present on the occasion. Navy won the mach by 25-19,25-22 and 25-20.
In table tennis men’s singles final, Saleem Abbas of WAPDA defeated Yousaf Raja of the same unit. The score was 11-6, 11-9, 11-8,8-11.15-13. The score was 11-4,11-9,11-7. Yasir Butt and Rahim of Punjab won bronze medal. In Judo women’s event 40kg category, Kiran of Army defeated Zahida Ranjha of WAPDA and won gold medal. Amna of Khyber PK and Rabia of Punjab won bronze medals. The 44 kg category won by Araan of Army. She defeated Maryam of WAPDA who received silver medal. Mnsha of Punjab and Masooma of Balochistan won bronze medals.
The below-48 kg category was won by Sonam of WAPDA. Maryam of Punjab secured silver medal while Saima of Army and Aiman Riaz of Sindh got bronze medals. In open weight category Humair of WAPA won gold medal while Raheela of Punjab secured silve medal.
Faouzia of Army and Shumaila Naz of Police got bronze medals. In baseball event Army beat WAPDA by 11-9 and won the gold medal. Police team stood on third position and got bronze medal.
Army and Punjab teams qualified for final to be played today. In the first semi-final Punjab beat Navy by 4-0. The second semi final between Pakistan Air Force (PAF) ended in 0-0 draw. The Army team qualified to final as it has won all its league matches. The third position went to WAPDA as they beat Khyber PK team by 2-1.
Army to maintain
supremacy in 31st National Games: Army should maintain its supremacy to retain the coveted Qaid-e-Azam Trophy in the ongoing 31st National Games, said Director Army Sports Directorate Brig Aqtedar Naseer Ahamd while addressing a press conference here at Games media center.
He said the Army had entered athletes in 21 men and seven female competitions. The Army, he said, so far grabbed 85 gold medal, 67 silver medals and 26 bronze medals. In the overall athletics Army athletes got 13 gold medals, 10 silver and 8 bronze medals, in bodybuilding got two silver, in boxing seven bronze so far besides seven of the Army pugilists were in the finals.
He said that the Army won so far three gold medals in judo with one silver and three bronze medal while in the Men and Women Army won three golds, seven silver and nine bronze besides winning two silver and one bronze in Men and Women Table Tennis.
