LAHORE – Lahore Police showed an increase in crime rate by 11 per cent in its annual report while the ground reality is different from what it has been depicted, Pakistan Today has learnt.
Official figures of the Lahore Police reveal that 1838 more crime cases were registered by the Lahore Police in 2010 as compared to 2009. Data revealed that in 2010, Lahore Police registered 18116 cases, out of which investigators have traced 8770 cases, 5455 remained untraced, 1589 cases were disposed of by investigators during investigation, challans of 7535 cases were submitted to the courts and 3536 are still under investigations, while in 2009, the number of total registered cases was 16278 till December 27, out of which 4739 remained untraced, 7892 cases were traced by investigators, challans of 6981 cases were submitted to courts, 1589 cases were disposed off by the investigators during investigations and in 3034 cases’ investigations are still underway.
These crime figures do not include the mounting incidents of terrorism, which has been the gift of the former dictator’s pro-American, post-9/11 policies, which incidentally are still continuing.
Lahore Police sources on other hand claimed that like older times, once again Police officials have adopted same policy of not registering First Information Reports (FIRs) in order to show that crime has not increased alarmingly but it increased according to the increase in population of the provincial capital. While describing the fact sources said that police emergency number 15 has received more than hundred thousand emergency calls till December 27 out of which more than 50 per cent were found true. Sources said that these 50 per cent true calls means that Lahore Police should have registered almost 50,000 cases whereas the number of total cases registered is not more than 20 per cent in any case.
Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Aslam Tareen does not agrees with the logic and he while responding to a query of Pakistan Today said that receiving call regarding information of any incident is some thing different than the registration of cases. He said that Lahore Police has done well in year 2010 and while fighting with terrorism and performing security duties, his jawans has kept things thing tight for local criminals as well. He said that the increase in crime rate is very nominal against the increase of population in the provincial capital. He said that crime rate has increased in few heads.
