MALE/THIMPU – Maldives has nominated its former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed for the post of the next secretary general to the eight-member South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC), a local news agency quoted Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed as saying on Wednesday.
Dhiyana would perform her duties as the SAARC secretary general for three years starting from March 1st 2011, as the regional forum has accepted her name for the post, Dr Shaheed told Haveeru news agency. Currently, Dhiyana is representing Maldives in the 16th SAARC Summit to be concluded on Thursday (Dec 30).
It is pertinent to mention here that Dhiyana is the second Maldivian to be appointed as the SAARC secretary general after special presidential envoy Ibrahim Hussein Zakee, who also held prominent positions during the former regime. Her nomination to SAARC comes days after her husband Abdulla Jabir, a former lawmaker, joined the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party.
