Lahore – Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) President Dr Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair has said that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has nothing to do with the proposed changes in blasphemy law.
“It is President Zardari who is more interested in the changes, as if trying to fulfill his commitments, which he made with Pope Benedict in Vatican, last September,” he said in an exclusive interview with Pakistan Today.
Dr Zubair talked about different issues including the call of shutter down strike on December 31 against proposed amendments in blasphemy law. He said the entire nation will remain at home on that day to show ‘love’ for the Prophet (PBUH) and displeasure against government’s silence over the issue. “We have completed all our arrangements for the strike. People from different walks of life; lawyers, business communities, labour unions and civil society is engaged for the purpose.
All small and big groups are united under the banner of Tahafuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat Tehrik (TNRT),” he said. Dr Zubair who is also the convenor of TNRT told that after the strike, they will hold a public meeting in Karachi on January 9 and will chalk out their future plan. While responding to a question about MMA’s revival, he said,
“Let Maulana Fazlur Rehman first digest what he has eaten from the government’s hands, then we will think about the MMA revival.” Commenting on the emergence of an intolerant breed in the Barelvi school of thought, he said that though his party represented the Barelvi sect,
they condemned all such groups. Earlier, a JUP delegation led by its president met Pakistan Today Editor Arif Nizami and congratulated him for publishing a trend setting newspaper, and shared views about the current political situation.
JUP General Secretary Qari Zawar Bhadar, JUP Information Secretary Rasheed A Rizvi and Dr Javed Akhtar were also present on the occasion.
