Adnan grabs gold in Long Jump

LAHORE – Adnan Jahangir of Punjab won gold medal in long jump in the 31st National Games being held at Quyyum Stadium, Peshawar, amidst tight security. Adnan got the first position for Punjab with a jump of 3.38 metres.
Mohamamd Kalil of Punjab secured fifth place in the javelin throw when he threw the javelin 58.97 metres. In women shot putt, Punjab’s Razia Younas got sixth position with a throw of 8.13 metres.
Meanwhile, semi-finals places were decided in the National Games Football Tournament being played at Islamabad.
Khyber KP and Railways were eliminated from the football when national title holder WAPDA were held to a draw by PAF 2-2 at Ground, outside Jinnah Stadium of Quaid-i-Azam Sports Complex, Islamabad.
Meanwhile, five times National Games gold medallist Army topped Group-A by beating Navy 1-0. Front runner Shakil Yousof netted the all important goal in the 18th minute. WAPDA, eighth times national champion who won the National Games at Minto Park in 1992, dominated the Group-B game. But PAF came back twice to fire the leveller.
PPFL top scorer Arif Mehmood put WAPDA in front with 18th minute strike but Muhammad Mjahid reduced the arrears with 59th minute strike past keeper Abdul Aziz. Tauseef Ahmed restored WAPDA’s advantage with brilliant 64th minute strike.
PAF came back strongly and once again Mujahid did the damage with 82nd minute gal. On Tuesday, Army and WAPDA will play the first semi-final at Ground No. 1, 1 PM), while Group B winner PAF will face runner-up Group A Navy in other penultimate round match at Ground No.2, 2 PM).
The final of the event will be played on Wednesday, at 1 PM after bronze medal match at same venue earlier at 11 AM. The five-day football event of 31st National Games will conclude on December 29.
The soldiers, already in last four, will attempt to make it four in a row, having completed triumphs of gold in soccer of National Games three years ago. They earlier won the gold in 2001 Games at Lahore and 2004 Games. Karachi’s gold was overall their fifth gold, having won top slot on 1995 and 1997.
