LAHORE – The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) observed former PM and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s 3rd death anniversary on Monday across the city with a pledge to continue PPP founder and former PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s (ZAB) and Benazir’s mission for parliament’s supremacy.
Like other parts of the country, PPP Lahore chapter office bearers and workers commemorated Benazir’s 3rd death anniversary by organising Quran khawani, candle-lit vigils, rallies and seminars.
In Lahore, local leaders and workers organised several functions including five major functions. A Quran khawani was held at the Governor’s House, Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Chairman Asif Hashmi’s residence, Pakistan Railways People’s Labour Forum and at PPP Lahore Women Wing president’s residence.
The PPP Lahore chapter and People’s Lawyers Forum organised candle-lit vigils at the Chairing Cross and Liberty Chowk in which hundreds of party workers and local leaders paid glowing tributes to their leader.
Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, addressing participants of the Quran khawani at the Governor’s House, said that mid-term elections and the federal government’s collapse were things of the past and PPP’s opponents must stop daydreaming, as general elections would only be held in 2013.
The governor said that ZAB gave the public the proper way of democracy, which was present in every corner of Pakistan on which the people had elected the PPP into power six times.
He said that in the world’s history, no family had sacrificed for democracy and the masses like the Bhutto family. Taseer termed the PPP a heritage of Bhutto family. On tracing people involved in Benazir’s murder, Taseer said that it was a serious matter, which could not be resolved in a short time span.
The Quran khawani was attended by local party leaders including former FIA additional director general Ahmed Riaz Sheikh, the Punjab governor’s political secretary Hafizur Rehman Malik, former PPP Lahore president Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar, Hafiz Ikhlaq Ahmed Guddu, Shamim Niazi and Zarqa Butt.
