ISLAMABAD – Dirty streams, choked by all types of pollutants have so far been left unclean by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), posing a huge threat to the capital’s environment.
Sixteen streams (nallahs), running through various sectors of the capital, are blocked by waste including dead trees and pollutants from legal and illegal sewerage connections, a survey conducted by Pakistan Today revealed.
Kachi abadis are located on the banks of these streams in sectors G-7, G-8, F-6, F-7 and I-9, aggravating the problem. During monsoons, there is an added problem of the streams being flooded.
These streams are a major source of waterborne diseases and most of the tube wells supplying water to the residents are located close to them, the survey revealed.
“A plan to clean these streams was chalked out long ago but it is still to be implemented,” a CDA official asking not to be named told Pakistan Today, adding that huge funds are allocated every year for the same but nobody knew why the plans were left unimplemented.
