LAHORE – Punjab University (PU) administration stopped Islami Jamiat-e-Taliba (IJT) activists to use the varsity premises to celebrate their Youm-e-Tasis at PU Hostel no 4 on Thursday.
PU deployed security guards at the two gates of the hostel while the IJT activists criticized the administration for not allowing them to hold the function. PU Resident Officer (RO) Dr Javed Sami said that IJT activist did not get a permission to hold this function so the administration just made sure they did not.
The situation became tense after a clash between IJT activists and PU security guards on the issue. PU sources claim that it was a yearly practice that IJT activists tried to celebrate this occasion and PU administration deployed added security to stop them.
According to the IJT activists, they had not any political motive behind the organizing the event but still the administration was adamant at using force. PU administration closed the gates and sealed the hostel for anyone external to the hostel, said sources.
They also said that besides the ‘negative activities’, IJT was also popular for holding constructive activists including the Dars-e-Quran and book fairs, in which thousand of the students participated.
According to PU rules, any group who wanted to organize gatherings should inform the administration prior to the event, but IJT activists did not follow the rules so the administration used force, said a PU official.
