Dense fog envelops the city

LAHORE – Heavy fog and cold weather was witnessed in Lahore on Thursday, as the minimum temperature fell to 2.5 degree Celsius. The Met Office has forecast cold weather with heavy fog in the coming days.
According to details, around 22 cars collided with each other in the heavy fog owing to which two people died while several others were injured. The bad weather also delayed foreign and domestic flights by five to seven hours.
An Allama Iqbal International Airport official told Pakistan Today that flights for London and New York were delayed while domestic flights scheduled for Karachi and Islamabad were also postponed owing to which passengers of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and other private airlines suffered.
The National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) closed the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway from 7:45am to 11:15am owing to heavy fog, a motorway police official said. A heavy traffic jam was witnessed from the Ravi Toll Plaza to the Thokar Niaz Baig on the year’s shortest day.
Citizens faced problems in going to offices while students also reached schools late owing to heavy fog but students got a relief, as the Punjab government announced school winter holidays for the whole next week.
According to a Met Office official, fog would get thicker today (Friday) and spread into the city from open areas. He said that minimum visibility of 20 metres was observed in the airport area, which might decrease to 10 meters today (Friday).
