ISLAMABAD: Police on Wednesday arrested two senior police officers in court on orders of an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge for their alleged involvement in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
ATC Judge Rana Nisar Ahmed, who was conducting the trial in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, rejected the bail applications of former city police officer (CPO) Saud Aziz and former superintendent of police Khurram Shahzad, ordering their immediate arrest.
The two officials are accused of security breaches, covering up evidence by hosing down the crime scene and failing to conduct a post-mortem examination on Benazir. “Both police officers have been arrested. The court rejected their application for bail and the judge said it was their duty to carry out the post-mortem,” Special Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali told reporters.
Ali said the police officers would be included in the trial of five alleged militants. The court has been adjourned until January 7. Both officers are still in service – Aziz, 53, in Lahore and Shahzad, 38, in Rawalpindi – but will be suspended from duty following their arrests, the prosecutor said.
