LAHORE: National Highway and Motorways Police (NH&MP) on Wednesday observed the start of road safety week in connection with the efforts to reduce accidents and creating awareness among commuters regarding traffic rules and regulations at training institutes in Sheikhupura and Lahore. Delegations from stake holders like Rescue 1122, Nestle, Shell, transporter associations, students from universities, colleges, school and people from different walks of life, especially who suffered losses in accidents will be invited to participate in the road safety program.
NH&MP DIG Syed Ibne Hussain, SSP/Commandant Jehanzaib Khan Jogeazi, SSP Riaz Khan Gara and 1122 DG Dr Rizwan Naseer were also present on the occasion. Syed Ibne Hussain said that NH&MP was the ‘pioneer’ in creating road safety responsiveness among the masses as previously there was no notion of road safety approachability in Pakistan. Road safety is a community issue and with the establishment of NH&MP, an entire new concept of traffic management has emerged, he said.
Its enormity necessitates acquaintance and enforcement of traffic rules and skills by public at large. He said thousands of people lost their lives every year in road mishaps and millions were injured and financial loses had surmounted to billions of rupees. In addition to immediately visible losses, even more painful were the emotional injuries that could not be accounted for in monetary forms, he added. Jahanzaib Khan Jogezai said the motorway police have been devoting its energies towards safety of road users and have adopted different approaches for educating and creating road safety awareness among the masses.
