Ex-police officials arrested in Benazir murder case

RAWALPINDI – Former Central Police Officer of Rawalpindi Saud Aziz and former Superintendent of Police Khurram Shahzad have been arrested from the courtroom after the court denied their bails in Benazir Bhutto murder case, a private TV channel reported on Wednesday.
Both the former police officials were present in the court. Anti-Terrorist Court (ATC) No-III judge Rana Nisar Ahmed on December 19, 2010 had extended date of interim bail of former CPO and former SP allegedly involved in the Benazir murder case till December 22.
The trial was held at the Adiala Jail. Charges against the accused were framed that they were involved in the murder of Benazir Bhutto, the two time former prime minister. Benazir was assassinated when she was leaving after addressing a public meeting at Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) presented a provisional challan in which both the former police officials were accused. Two points were raised during the hearing; why did the person deputed on former prime minister’s security removed from the scene, and why did the post-mortem not conducted.
In April, a UN panel accused the government of failing to provide Benazir with adequate protection and said investigations were hampered by intelligence agencies and other officials who impeded an unfettered search for the truth. After the UN report was published in April, the government removed senior police and intelligence officials from their posts.
