KARACHI: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jahangir has denied reports which appeared on Sunday in newspapers claiming that the SCBA executive committee had passed a resolution against amendments in the blasphemy laws and pardon for Aasia Bibi.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, Asma Jahangir said an SCBA executive committee member had tabled a resolution regarding these matters during the committee’s second meeting endorsing due reverence for the name of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
The rest of the resolution – the portions regarding Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code and the case of Aasia Bibi and its consequences – was deferred with consensus, she added.
Some reports had also claimed that Asma Jahangir had withheld her right to dissent with regards to the material within the resolution. The SCBA president denied these claims and reiterated her stance in favour of amendments in the blasphemy laws.
“The SCBA regrets the attempt made by one of its executive members to mislead the press and the public,” she said, adding that the bar association was a ‘responsible body’ and its resolutions were ‘fully debated before being passed, especially when unanimously’.
